Dhanaulti is a small village with 20 to 25 houses, including shops and 6 hotels and some restaurants. There are no chemists, there is a rustic horse stable. I was there for two and a half days, on the first day of my stay and on my walks, ( in a T shirt, shorts and a pullover) I attracted the amusing gaze of the locals especially the older men and women, but on the second day they had accepted my presence. In the night there was a awesome silence, as I stood outside on the terrace and smoked a cigarette, I could hear loud crackling sounds of my cigarette burning!
How to reach:
New Delhi ---->Dehradun ----> Mussoorie (a well known hillstation)----->Dhanaulti
There is a train Shatabdi Express in the early morning for Dehradun and Mussoorie Express in the night. One can also book a seat in the Volvo AC buses from New Delhi to Dehradun. The bus stand at Dehradun is at a walking distance from the railway station. From here one can take a bus or hire a taxi to go to Mussoorie. The buses leave after every half an hour and the fare is appx Rs 25/-. The taxis charge as much as Rs 350/- and both these buses and taxis are available from 7am in the morn till 7 pm in the night, though the last bus that leaves mussoorie for dehradun is at 5 pm. Bus timings from Mussoorie to Dhanaulti : 8am,9am,10am,11am,1.30 pm, (last bus), but the schedule may changing depending on the weather conditions. I boarded a bus and bought the ticket in the bus itself, otherwise tickets can be made in advance from the counter #1 in the bus stand. The bus took 50 mins to reach Mussoorie. The bus left me at lower Mussoorie and i needed to go to the Tehri Bus Stand to catch a bus/jeep to Dhanaulti. From the place where i got down, it is a uphill walk through Landour Road to the Tehri Bus Stand on Tehri Marg. The first bus had already left at 9.00 am (it was 10.30 by my watch), and there stood a Shared Jeep to leave for Chamba shortly. Dhanaulti is 35 kms on the way to Chamba on the Mussoorie- Tehri Road. The jeep left for its destination & took 45 mins to reach Dhanaulti. The fare was appx Rs 25/-. These jeeps are available till 2 pm at Mussoorie to go to Dhanaulti, and from Dhanaulti to Mussoorie till 5 pm. But it is suggested to start a little early in these mountains as there is always a fear of landslides, though these mainly happen in the monsoons. If you ask the driver to drop you near a hotel he will drop you near one and i got down in front of Garwhal Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited's - Tourist Rest House. seev www.gmvnl.com
